Spyderco

Spyderco knives are different, peculiar, out there. Spyderco’s thinking “outside the box” in the knife industry allowed them to introduce new concepts to the knife culture. Some other concepts include; One-hand opening, serrations on a folder and a clip to attach a knife to a pocket. Spyderco is definitely one of the top knife making companies because of their dedication to researching and developing improved and better performing materials. Their recognizable appearance is a result of designing functional tools to a pocketknife. Spyderco Knives may look curious, funky, ugly, or whatever, but you will never be be able to deem them unusable or undependable. Making knives that consistently deliver reliable high-performance requires an ongoing commitment to testing and this is what they strive to do. Spyderco has a million-dollar testing facility. There they test the edge retention with a machine, look for rust development with Q-FOG, check the force needed to open and close a knife. They also repeatedly test for stress, wear, optimal heat-treating and actively search for higher quality, performance enhancing steels and materials. By performing all the testing it allows Spyderco to keep their promise to customers of the high quality reliable cutting tool they purchase. Recommended care straight from Spyderco should be followed: Spyderco knives are an investment. Knives are designed to perform one particular function, that is cutting. With that in mind Spyderco uses exclusively high-carbon stainless steels. High-carbon premium stainless steels provide superior edge retention but can rust if not correctly cared for (rust is rarely the result of a manufacturing defect). Rust may form when your knife is used in a saltwater environment or exposed to moisture in general. If surface rust appears, buff the steel with a metal polishing compound before the steel becomes pitted. Thoroughly rinse salt water off with fresh water, dry your knife completely (inside and out) and apply a light coat of oil or silicone to all steel parts. To ensure safe operation regularly inspect the interior of the knife for pocket lint and grime. Clean both the well of the lock and inside the handle often using a toothpick, hot water and mild soap or detergent. Rinse thoroughly, dry the knife inside and out and lubricate all steel components with oil or silicone. A couple drops of lubricant at the locking and pivot points will ensure smooth action.

How To Skin a Deer & Tools Needed.

Posted in Hunting with tags , , , on January 9, 2010 by westernknifeco

The tools of the deer-care trade are a couple of skinning knives, a sharpening steel and a Handsaw. Hang a field-dressed buck in a cool (40 – 50 degrees) place as soon as possible. For easy skinning, hang a buck from a gambrel. Cut up and through the hide on the inside of the hind legs. Make a circular cut around the joint of each leg. With the sharp point and blade of a knife, skin out the hindquarters. Saw off the hind legs below the joints. To open the rear of a deer for cooling and skinning, saw a little ways into the pelvis. Start by skinning down toward a deer’s neck. Grab the hide and pull, most of it will peel right off. Cut off the tail. Don’t let the long hair get on the meat. Keep pulling and skinning the hide over the ribs and down to the shoulders. If you ARE NOT going to cape a buck for mounting, cut down into the brisket as far as possible. Saw off the front legs at the joints then cut along the insides of the front legs and skin them out.

If you DO PLAN to mount a buck, make the two primary caping cuts around a buck’s body behind the front legs, and along the back of its neck and out to each antler. Pull and skin the hide down over a buck’s head. Saw off a buck’s head with long cape intact. Take your trophy to a taxidermist or freeze it as soon as possible. Check for any dirt or hair and if you find any remove at once. Cut away any blood-shot meat around the bullet holes. If you want the hide tanned, wipe the bloody side clean with a towel lay it flat and spread borax or salt on the inside of the hide. Fold it lengthwise, hair out, roll up, tie, package and head for the taxidermist’s shop. Or again, freeze it and bring it to him when you can.

The Perfect Self Defense!!

Cold Steel Ti-Lite

Posted in Military Knives with tags , , , on December 11, 2009 by westernknifeco

The Cold Steel Ti-Lite Tactical Knives evoke the sleek speed and rebellious lines of the classic 1950’s-styled switchblade. Unlike most switchblades however, they are legal to carry nearly everywhere.

The Ti-Lite features Japanese made AUS 8A stainless steel blades with a bead blast finish, razor sharp edges and sturdy, needle sharp points. The CNC milled handles are forged from super tough 7075 Aluminum billets and are given an attractive bead blast surface and finished with a protective EDP (Electric Discharge Plating) coating. And for maximum strength and safety, Cold Steel has equipped the Ti-Lites  with a patent pending, stainless steel leaf spring lock (proven, in our tests, to hold 130 lbs).

For ease of carry, the Ti-Lite comes equipped with a small, but unobtrusive steel pocket clip, and can be opened rapidly by using the thumb studs or by snagging a quillion on the edge of your pocket as you draw your knife out.

The Zytel® Handled Ti-Lites®

Custom quality folding knives, especially those manufactured with Titanium handles and Titanium leaf spring locks are undeniably strong, lightweight, and beautiful to look at, but they’re also quite expensive.

We know that many knife enthusiasts love the look of the Ti-Lites but find the prices a little steep. So Cold Steel created some very affordable alternatives. The Zytel® Ti-Lite with a 4 inch blade mimics the look of its more expensive counterparts almost exactly, and Cold Steels model that features a six inch blade is a completely unique Ti-Lite, virtually in a class by itself.

Instead of 7075 Aluminum, Cold Steel used 43% glass filled Zytel for the handles and Cold Steel used high quality stainless steel for the leaf spring lock and liners. The results are extraordinarily lightweight knives that are remarkably strong, sharp and good looking.

These folding knives are also great Tactical knives and Military Knives used everywhere around the world. Cold Steel Knives are simply just a great companion to have in your pocket.
